God of War is among the most popular gaming series globally; nevertheless, if you haven’t played it before and want to start from the beginning, you’ll need to know all there is to know about all God of War games in order.
And that’s what this article attempts to do: tell you all you need to know about the franchise from the beginning to the most recent edition!
The God of War franchise is an action-adventure game created by David Jaffe that has become a flagship product for the Sony PlayStation brand. The core series of the franchise comprises eight titles, with a ninth one in the works and scheduled for release in 2022.
Background of the Game
The game is set during the mythical period of ancient Greece, with the protagonist Kratos being inserted into Greek mythology. It relates the narrative of Kratos, a Spartan Army Captain who, after being defeated in battle, vows his devotion to Ares.
Ares bestows upon him the god-like Blades of Chaos, which enable him to dominate the battlefield. Ares continues to exploit Kratos to pursue war across Greece, tricking him into murdering his wife and daughter to believe that it will improve his warrior skills.
Kratos renounces his master and pledges vengeance on the God of War once the scheme backfires. The games in the series continue to focus on vengeance and the backstories of how these events occurred.
The second phase, based on Norse mythology, began in 2012. It features an aged Kratos who is accompanied by his son Atreus. However, unlike the first age, Kratos is on his way to redemption, which in Norse mythology concludes with Kratos and Atreus fighting the Gods.
What is the total number of God of War games in the series?
The God of War series has a total of 15 games, including the upcoming Ragnarok. However, only six of the games are considered part of the core series and God of war games: the numbered entries, Ascension, the new God of War, and Ragnarok.
However, the two portable games might be said to have earned their place in the cosmos. The PlayStation Portable games Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta were released. They provide a smattering of background information for events in the GoW world. They are not, however, essential for the whole experience.
For the series, there is one spin-off game. In the GoW universe, Betrayal is a mobile game. Aside from that, three combo packs have been issued.
Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta are included in the Origins Collection for the PlayStation Portable. Finally, Saga contains the three original GoW games: Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta, and Saga.
What is the chronological God of war order?
If you play the games in this sequence, this is the chronological tale of Kratos, from the beginning of his playable existence through the end of his current exploits. If necessary, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta must be played in this God of war game order.
Ascension: God of War
Release Date: March 12, 2013
Work on Platforms: PS3
One of the Saga’s great lost heroes. God of War Ascension was released in the latter months of the PlayStation 3, only a few months before the PlayStation 4, when everyone was looking forward to the next Sony platform. As a result, the title takes precedence over all others in the story. Six months after, Kratos accidentally murdered many people.
According to the game’s plot, the Ghost of Sparta revolted against Ares and fought with the Furies, who sought to punish him for his Betrayal. Thus, it’s crucial to understand why Kratos ended up working for the other gods, as well as the beginning of his sad redemption journey.

The history presented Kratos with his past once more, allowing him to undo his misdeeds and ushering in new confrontations with Ares.

“It all started with you,” —one of the most surprising and unforgettable hacks and slash games on the PlayStation 2. After more than ten years of his duties to the gods, Kratos is entrusted with assassinating Ares, the God of War, in God of War.
But, before committing it, he embarks on a mission in which he hopes to find peace and save Greece finally. So Kratos, aided by Athena, goes off to pursue Pandora’s Box, the only weapon capable of defeating Ares.
His trip quickly becomes a remarkable epic filled with flashbacks from his past, unfinished business, and confrontations against jellyfish, Minotaurs, hydras, Cerberus, and other mystical monsters.
Ghost of Sparta

In his Ghost of Sparta storyline, he also revealed Deimos, Kratos’ younger brother, and explained how his distinctive tattoo was made and the scar’s origins on his eye.
The Ghost of Sparta, now a deity of Olympus, would have to look for his mother to solve the riddles surrounding his birth and family. Next, Kratos would go on a new quest to discover what happened to Deimos, whom he had always assumed was dead but now thinks is alive.
God of War II
Release Date: March 13, 2007
Work on Platforms: PS2, PS3, PS Vita
Kratos is enthroned as God of War (the Ghost of Sparta explains why), and, like Ares, Olympus becomes bored of him and decides to get rid of him. Thus starts God of War II, in which Zeus betrays the Spartan, takes away his abilities, and eventually puts an end to his life in the first level. But killing the Ghost of Sparta wasn’t going to be simple.
Kratos quickly departs the underworld and embarks on a new adventure in pursuit of the strength, equipment, and allies he’ll need to exact vengeance on the gods, who have not only exploited him throughout his existence but have now betrayed him. But, unfortunately, they are completely unaware of their error.
God of War III
Release Date: March 16, 2010
Work on Platforms: PS3, PS4

God of War (2018)
Release Date: April 20, 2018
Work on Platforms: PS4
Finally, we have the 2018 Game of the Year, which completely changed and reinvented the plot, keeping us on the end of our chairs not only on PlayStation 4 but also on PlayStation 5. Kratos has attempted to move far away from Greece to forget about his past, settle down, and raise a family.
However, the new Gods that surround him do not appear eager to abandon him. Despite his best efforts to shield his kid from his fate and God’s will, Norse mythology will force him to take action and rely on him to survive a fresh and unique journey.
Untitled God of War Sequel
Release Date: 2022
Work on Platforms: PS4, PS5
The sequel to the God of War series’ ninth installment is set to be released in 2022. The game, which Santa Monica Studio will develop for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, will be partly based on Norse mythology and set in the franchise’s second period. It will star Kratos and his son Atreus and be a sequel to 2018’s God of War.
According to the predicted gameplay, the game will bring about Ragnarok, which will unfold the events of the end of days and the death of all Norse Gods. It was hinted at in the 2018 game when Kratos murdered Baldur, the Aesir God from Norse mythology.
God of War, despite its superb plot, spectacular visuals, and interesting action, had its flaws, the most notable of which was an oversupply of rehashed bosses and enemies. Still, considering how much the game has to offer, it’s easy to overlook this flaw.
Overall, this game earned rave reviews, and we’re looking forward to seeing where the developers take the franchise in the sequel!
