Cyberpunk 2077 Looking to Achieve a Witcher- Like Evolution

An influential member of CD Projekt Red has revealed details on how the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will develop in a manner akin to that of The Witcher series. More than a year has passed since the developer of Cyberpunk 2077 revealed the existence of a second game, called Orion.

After Phantom Liberty was recently released and received positive reviews, CDPR finished up its near-finished projects and turned its attention to longer-term projects like the creation of The Witcher 4 and the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. The company’s representatives periodically release information on these new games, even though they don’t plan to disclose any significant facts about them anytime soon. For example, Colin Walder, CDPR’s Director of Management and Audio Engineering, has stated that The Witcher 4’s development differs greatly from Cyberpunk 2077’s.

At the same time, the Cyberpunk 2077 prequel intends to emulate The Witcher series’ developmental trajectory. This information was provided by CDPR’s Narrative Director, Igor Sarzynski, who recently spoke with PC Gamer about it. Sarzynski elaborated on this idea by pointing out that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings provided a very different experience from the first game in the series. This transformation was evident in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as well. Sarzynski explained that the goal of CDPR is for Cyberpunk 2077 and its upcoming sequel to evolve in a similar way.

Though the goal of the upcoming Cyberpunk game is to deliver an even better experience, it’s probably going to include some new twists, contrary to how The Witcher 2 changed from its predecessor. Sarzynski claims that some features of Cyberpunk 2077—like the playstyles, interactive scene system, music, art, and city design—performed incredibly well from the beginning and that these aspects might not change much in the follow-up. While CDPR admits it took a while to perfect, it appears to be happy with the present status of both the leveling system and NPC interactivity, so they may return without major changes.

It will take some time before we can determine whether CDPR is successful in achieving this objective. The project is currently in the “conceptual design” phase, according to information revealed by another company representative in an October investor presentation. This suggests that the release of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is probably years away.
