They involved backstories of characters such as failed marriages, struggling with careers, and dysfunctional relationships that lead to drastic and dangerous decisions. This bank heist film is one of the best made and is a fantastic watch. There are multiple memorable scenes, including one of the best police vs. criminals shootouts of all time.

Heat has a lot more than just a fantastic bank heist plot; it has an intricate storyline and captivating characters. It gives us a peek into the motivations of both the cops and the cons. 2. The Town (2010)

The Town is an Oscar-nominated heist movie directed by Ben Affleck. You may already know Affleck as a top-notch actor, and in The Town, he has also proven his directorial chops. Watch the two friends Doug McRay, played by Ben Affleck, and James Coughlin, played by Jeremy Renner, turn to a life of crime as they rob armored cars and banks in Charlestown broken. Rumor has it that this film has inspired many bank robbers worldwide.

Things take a turn for the worse for the gang when Doug’s new girlfriend Claire, played by Rebecca Hall, turns out to be a bank manager who James kidnaped at the start of the movie.

Affleck brings a lot of vulnerability and honesty to his portrayal of Doug – a criminal with a heart of gold. As the story progresses, we see him question his morality and life of crime, which he has blindly followed since a young age. Both Affleck and Renner keep the audience captivated.

The dim-witted couple played by Al Pacino and Chris Sarandon is charming thanks to the strong performances by the two phenomenal actors. The movie also stars the late John Cazale, a true legend of the world of Hollywood movies. The film secured six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor In A Leading Role for Pacino. Director Sidney Lumet’s directorial work got him an Oscar nomination for Best Director.

The movie takes a revenge turn when the James Caan character is double-crossed after he breaks the safe. With a solid supporting cast, including Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson, and Jim Belushi, Thief is a top-class heist movie that is a must-watch. 

Like many of Michael Mann’s movies, Thief is a complete package with rich character development, slow-build suspense, and explosive violence. If you love Michael Mann’s films, then Thief will definitely make it to your favorites list. 

12. Heist (2001)

Heist is a worldwide popular heist movie written and directed by David Mamet. The film is also famous for featuring Gene Hackman’s final performances before he retired from acting in 2004. Hackman is an aging jewel thief; he ends up at odds with the crime boss whom he has served for years.

Sam Rockwell co-stars as the crime boss’s nephew, who watches over Gene Hackman as he pulls off his final heist. 

Heist is a well-written heist thriller that is jam-packed with great wordplay and performances. Heist is filled with double-crossing and surprise twists. Heist sat the bar high for the heist films that came after this robbery movie with its exciting, tense, and unpredictable storyline. Heist is hands-down one of the best heist movies of recent times.

13. Rififi (1955)

Those of you who haven’t watched Rififi before are missing out on a great opportunity. The groundbreaking film from 1955 ushered in a new era of cinematic gloom, which was unlike anything else that had been seen up to that point. The protagonist of the story, played by Servais, is a con man named Tony who has recently been released from prison after serving a sentence of five years. He forms an alliance with Jo, his former student, and Mario, another thief. 

What made Rififi one of the most memorable heist movies ever produced isn’t the brilliant plan to steal diamonds; instead, it’s the heartbreaking conclusion that what you aspire to be and the person you are aren’t always the same thing. One of the most impactful moments in cinematic history is the dramatic and heartbreaking sequence between Jo and his spouse.

14. Snatch (2000)

Snatch, the best film directed by Guy Ritchie, is an anthology that tells a number of interrelated events that all revolve around a gigantic 86-carat diamond. The story of Turkish, an everyman boxing promoter portrayed by Jason Statham and set in the criminal underworld of London, revolves around the central character of the film. When his prizefighter is knocked out by Mickey, a quick-talking Irish gypsy played by Brad Pitt, Turkish will have to improvise since he has no other choice. 

In the meantime, a strategy is being developed to retrieve a gigantic diamond that has been misplaced before it is completely lost to the world. Although the plot is difficult to explain, you can be sure that this is among the greatest heist movies now available.

15. Bottle Rocket (1996)

Bottle Rocket, directed by the ever-mysterious Wes Anderson and released in 1996, is not your typical picture about robbing a bank. This offbeat story follows two pals who have lofty goals but not a lot of common sense as they seek to commit the ideal crime, what that may be. The complicated scheme requires stealing for the next seventy-five years in order to set the couple up for a life of ease. To get started, the two would-be criminals make the decision to practice their heist abilities, which turns out to be as disastrous as could have been anticipated. Simply said, Bottle Rocket is a movie that makes little to no sense, and we have no problem with that.

16. Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

In the event that he is unable to do the assignment, Raymond Calitri, a ruthless criminal lord who is portrayed by Christopher Eccleston, the former Doctor Who, will kill Kip. 

There is a superfluous montage of Raines gathering the old crew back together, which features Angelina Jolie in deadlocks along with a mute Vinnie Jones, as is customary in all of the best heist flicks. In all of his whispering and yelling brilliance, Nicholas Cage.

17. The Italian Job (2003)

The Italian Job is yet another excellent remake of a classic heist film, and it has Edward Norton at the height of his sleazy portrayal as the burglar who betrays his team in order to take $30 million in pure gold and then sends them to their watery graves. Unluckily for Norton, among those persons happens to be Mark Wahlberg, who, as we learned from Transformers, is virtually unbeatable. This bodes ill for Norton. 

The crew manages to stay alive and comes up with a scheme to strike revenge on their enemies by reclaiming the riches they worked so hard to earn before making their getaway using three Mini Coopers. The Italian Job is one of the best heist movies because it does such an excellent job of balancing the two extremes of the fun and farce spectrum.

18. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels is the movie that made Guy Ritchie a household name. It is not only one of the very best heist movies that has ever been created, but it is also an excellent illustration of how brilliant British cinema can be. Eddie (Moran), a poker whiz who is the protagonist of the movie, gets taken advantage of by porn king Harry, who leaves him with a debt of £500,000 that must be paid within one week. 

Eddie and his buddies get the brilliant idea to rob the robbers after they learn that Eddie’s neighbors are trying to steal some notable marijuana farmers. Eddie learns that his neighbors are planning to rob the marijuana growers. Fans of heist movies should watch this gritty and subterranean movie directed by Guy Ritchie, one of his best films.

19. Sexy Beast (2001)

It is likely that Sir Ben Kingsley will be best known for his performance as Gandhi in the iconic film on the life of the Indian patriarch. However, almost twenty years later, he transformed into Don Logan, a foul-mouthed sociopath with a penchant for criminal activity. The film Sexy Beast, directed by Jonathan Glazer in 2001, is challenging to explain. 

When Logan is trying to intimidate his way to a huge score, he brings in a variety of characters, including former pornstars, safecrackers, and even those who threaten to transform human hands into ashtrays. Unfortunately, the rest of the film is not able to live up to the standard set by Kingsley’s performance, which may go down in history as possibly one of the best witnessed in a bank heist movie.

20. Set It Off (1996)

Set It Off is an entirely different beast from the other films directed by F. Gary Gray that are included on my list of the top heist movies. The film does away with its typical hypermasculinity and instead has an all-female lead cast, completely changing the perspective. In this unexpectedly successful film from 1996, four women who work for a cleaning company get together to commit a string of bank robberies, with ex-bank teller Frankie serving as their leader. 

The gritty urban story is about far more than robbing a bank; it delves deeply into the challenges that families and businesses face in the central business district of Los Angeles. Set It Off was an unexpected hit at the movie office, bringing in over 41 million dollars despite having a nine million budget to work with.
