As he’s speaking to Vivian Wembley, he explains to her that shes the last of her people. He shows her family tree which is similar to Sam Witwicky’s. Since she is the last member of the Witwicky line, this further implies that Sam was killed or died somewhere between Transfromers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: The Last Knight. This surely is a sudden ending especially for a character who had survived Revenge of the Fallen. 

Moreover, Shia LeBouf has also been very vocal about the quality of the Transformer movies, after he left which means it unlikely that he’ll be coming back for his role. This puts an absolute end to it.
