Samsung is releasing a brand new smartphone portfolio aimed at providing phones that can survive harsh climates and be easily used by military personnel. The FE, or fan edition, has become a staple in the mobile industry as a stripped-down line for Samsung’s flagship line. In a press conference held on Tuesday, Samsung announced that they would be releasing two new tactical edition phones to join the pre-existing rugged crew.
In the past, Samsung has released an S9 Tactical edition and the Galaxy S20 as well. Samsung seems to be improving its array of rugged phones by bringing in Tactical Edition models based on the well-received Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy XCover6 Pro. Tactical Edition (TE) phones are targeted toward military personnel, providing them with phones that enhance tactical awareness and decision-making.
The Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition uses a Gorilla Glass Victus +, an Armour Aluminium Frame, and a military-grade case to toughen up the phone. The device is also designed to be mounted on a person’s chest or forearm. The Tactical Edition of the latest Samsung flagship phone also has IP68 dust and water resistance for up to 30 minutes in 5 feet of water. This is a valuable feature to have on a phone designed to withstand all kinds of weather. The Galaxy S23 version will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
The XCover 6 Pro is already a part of Samsung’s rugged phone line. Still, the Tactical edition differs from the original version in many ways. Firstly, the device is able to withstand a drop of up to five feet and has an IP68 rating, just like the S23 TE. The phone is also able to withstand a broader range of temperatures. On the inside, it is powered by an octa-core processor and uses the Snapdragon 778G SoC.
These two new phones also have custom-made software with support for tactical radio, mission device protocols, laser range finder information, etc. They will also have regular communication methods such as standard LTE wireless avenues, CBRS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. These phones also offer stealth mode, which includes disabling LTE and E-911 capabilities for off-grid communication.
The two new TE phones also feature an optimized version of the Android Team Awareness Kit, which enhances real-time situational awareness experiences, and the Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit, which gives medics real-time patient encounter information to be able to capture a person’s medical history.
